Glen Thompson of Atos has been compiling the Premier League football fixtures since the inception of the Premier League in 1992. The first season was the 1992/93 season and, according to Glen, the entire football schedule takes about six months to compile.

The work starts at the beginning of the year as the fixtures have to be ready for release in June before the season commences in August each year. The organising of the fixtures isn’t, as some people may imagine, compiled by loading all the team names in to a computer and clicking enter. The entire premier league fixtures list is meticulously worked out manually.

Since starting work in his role, a task he has completed every season, he has compiled over 60,000 matches, and the work can only begin when he has received the playing dates from the Premier League.

However, the entire fixtures list is dependent on several factors. FIFA for example will supply all the dates for international matches – world cup qualifiers, European qualifiers, European club competitions etc plus competitions organised by the Football Association.

Then, and only then, can the league and League Cup matches be pencilled in with the dates that are not filled by all the other competitions.

The Premier League fixtures are broken down in to five sets for the first half of the season, these sets being reversed for the second half of the season. This methodology is known as sequencing and there are certain rules the compiler has to adhere to.

For example, in any five match sequence, each team should have at least three home matches and two away matches – or vice versa. The compiler is always striving to ensure this sequencing is maintained throughout the season, and at no time will any team have more than two consecutive away games or two home games.

Additionally, the compiler of the fixtures for the Premier League strives to ensure no team will start or finish the season with two away or two home matches. The two remaining fixture rule (no two away or home matches) is designed to be as fair as possible, to ensure no team is advantaged or disadvantaged, especially if they are trying to win points in a challenge for the title, for European places or to avoid relegation.

Also, during the Christmas and New Year period, id a team is at home on Boxing Day, then the New Year fixture will be away, or vice versa.

It is rare for clubs from the same locality (Everton and Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs for example) playing at home on the same day. For London clubs, the complexity increases and the home and away rule becomes more difficult to achieve.

Are there any dates you wish not to be at home?

Which club do you want to be paired with

Are there any teams you do not wish to play at home on Boxing Day?

Most of the request can be satisfied, but if there is an instance where something cannot be satisfied, the Premier League will ask the respective clubs which are the most important requests.

Unfortunately, certainly for the millions of punters out there who enjoy a ‘flutter’ on the football results, the premier league odds aren’t influenced by the way the fixtures are compiled. So, now you know how the Premier League fixtures are compiled, you may understand why sometimes your team is playing at the other end of the country on Boxing Day or New Year’s day.

You’ll probably still moan about the journey time to the far flung away ground, you’ll probably still blame the football scores on the tiring fixtures, but at least now you know the name of the person involved so you can blame him when your team gets thrashed six nil on Boxing Day.
